A charged glass rod attracts a charged plastic straw because when they are brought near each other then the glass rod accepts excess electrons and becomes negatively charged and the plastic straw give away electrons and becomes positively charged.
Lightning conductor can protect a building from lightning as it will conduct/transfer the electric charges from the clouds directly towards the ground and will not allow the high volt charges to find a path through the electrical appliances and wires of the building, thus preventing the damage of the electrical appliances and wires and protecting from any hazardous situation like fire.
Earthquakes cannot be predicted in advance. Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. USGS scientists can only calculate the probability that a significant earthquake will occur in a specific area within a certain number of years.
